Stockholm, and another cousin!

As we disembarked the train last night we were met by yet another of our Swedish cousins. Maria is related to us on our mother's (Flodine) side of the family. Jan and I have been facebook friends with Maria, but this is the first time we have met her....she is a lovely lady and has a very sweet dog, Sampson. Maria and Sampson walked us to our hotel and we said goodbye until morning.
We had planned that one of us would sleep on Maria's couch each night while we were in Stockholm, but the hotel surprised us with a larger room which we were able to put a 3rd bed into. The 3 of us have a very efficient morning routine that works well for us so the larger room was a pleasant surprise.

Maria returned to the hotel in the morning and we have walked all day....my fitbit recorded 22.126 steps, 9.38 miles! My feet and ankles are kinda puffy, and poor Jan twisted her knee a bit early on in the day. But we pushed on, troopers that we all are.

We walked through Stockholm's Old Town, saw the Royal Palace, beautiful churches, boats bridges, and covered many of the islands in the city. Lunch at an outdoor cafe/bar that served traditional Swedish fare was delicious!

 The narrowest street in Stockholm

The highlight of the day was the Vasa Ship Museum. This ship sunk in the Stockholm harbor in 1628. It was found in 1961 and was recovered. Due to the water conditions where it went down, the wood was mostly still intact and they even recovered some of the fabric from the sails! clothing, pottery, and other artifacts have also been recovered.

Later in the day, after a break at the hotel we went out onto the streets again. We visited the St Jacob's Church. It is the 3rd church on the site, the first being built in the 13th century. This building dates to 1643. The altar was stunning and some church artifacts are on display. One interesting item is the coffin cover for a woman who was buried in 1682!

Instead of all of us taking photos, today Tom was out official photographer.....but I still have nearly 160 photos from today to sort through now for you to see a sample. I (Barb) write this after Tom and Jan have gone to bed.

Stockholm;m is a very nice city! Tomorrow we will be taking a boat ride through the archipelago!
