Mid-trip reflections

As I am approaching the final leg (11 more days!) of my incredible summer in Sweden, I am thinking about what I have seen and experienced in the 1 month I have been here.

I have spent most of the time so far in the company of my generous hosts, the Seiberlich family and had some great sibling bonding with my sister Jan and my brother Tom. Our cousin Maria and her mother, along with other newly acquainted cousins and friends have enriched my trip as well.

I have visited places I have never been before and done things I have never done before. I have eaten wonderful foods and laughed until I cried. I have learned some Swedish history and traditions and visited some ancient churches, castles and ruins. I have learned a few Swedish words, but for the most part, the language baffles me.

Seeing the places where my ancestors lived, worked, worshipped, and walked has been both exciting and moving.

Today we will celebrate Alice's 14th birthday with cake gifts and a visit from family, cousins and Alices grandmother...and tomorrow we will drive to Denmark to visit the Louisianna Art Museum.

From there, I will part company with my Hosts and continue the rest of the trip as a solo traveller. I have my itinerary set, my car rental reservation in place, and a list of places to see.
This last part of the journey I will see parts of Sweden I have not yet been to, and some that my host family has never seen!
I will be looking for the homestead of my husband's grandfather and his ancestors, along with the homesteads of my maternal grandfathers.
I plan to visit the copper mining city of Falun, a restored farmhouse in Halsingland, and the beautiful countryside of Dalarna, home of the beautifully carved and painted wooden Dala Horses. I will stay in a city located on the Gota-Canal and spend a couple of night in a small B&B in the countryside, along with other cities along the way. I will be moving to a new location nearly every day.

I hope you will continue to follow me on the journey, and that you have enjoyed the trip with me so far!
